How to Upload a WordPress Theme/Plugin using File Manager

Some wordpress themes and plugins are not available on the WordPress themes/plugins area. For example, such themes may be premium, or custom made. This means, for you to use these themes/plugins, you need to manually upload them to your WordPress installation

Fortunately, the process of uploading this is not complicated. The guide below demonstrate how to upload a theme called Storefront

Prerequisites

  • You should have the zip file of your wordpress theme or plugins already downloaded to your computer. For my case, I downloaded my theme from https://wordpress.org/themes/storefront/

Procedure

1.Login to your cPanel and navigate to File Manager

2.Navigate to your WordPress folder. By default, this is the public_html folder if this is your primary domain

3.Navigate to wp-content >> themes

4.Click Upload button then select your theme file

5.Once upload completes, a zip file should be available on your themes folder. Right click and click Extract. A new folder will be created called storefront. This is your theme folder.

6. Now login to your WordPress Dashboard and go to Appearance >> Themes. Your theme will be listed there. You can then Activate it.

Troubleshoot

If on following step 6 above you do not find your WordPress theme, it could mean the zip folder for your theme contained several files bundled together. This is especially true for premium themes.

In this case, open the folder that resulted after you extracted the files and inside it look for another zip file – mostly having the same name as the theme – and move that out to the theme folder. You can then extract that and retry step 6.
