A maintenance mode may not always mean a page that is undergoing construction but also one that is facing problems which may destroy your reputation to the website visitors. You would rather update your site behind the scenes than do it openly, for this may disappoint your visitors when they see a failing website. However brief it may be. Hence consider a maintenance mode in WordPress that gives a 503 error to your website whenever things are not working well for your website, and this will prevent your decline in the SEO(search engine optimization).

How to enable Maintenance mode;

  • Login to cpanel or through SSH
  • Click on file manager- wordpress(public-html)
  • Use a text editor and create a file named- .maintenance
  • copy a code by name <?php $upgrading=time();?>
  • Save the changes to the maintenance file and this means its active unless you want to delete it to deactivate.

How to Customize The maintenance mode

  • Login to cpanel
  • Navigate file manager- to public-html,wp-content
  • use a text editor to create a file named maintenance.php file
  • Add html or php code so that your coming soon page will always be displayed as (maintenance.html or maintenance.php)on the page instead of a default message when the site is in maintenance mode/ coming soon page.
