What are name servers (nameservers)?

A name server is a server that hosts DNS zone files. It is a server on the internet specialized in handling queries regarding the location of a domain name’s various services. Nameservers are a fundamental part of the Domain Name System (DNS). They allow using domains instead of IP addresses. When a person visits a domain, the DNS lookup  checks the name servers provided by the domain, which indicate which server to check for the specific DNS records for that domain.

 

Where do I find my Truehost name servers

Your Truehost nameservers can be found in the welcome email we sent you containing your cpanel credentials.

 

How do I change my name servers

To change your name servers, you need to log in to your client area.

 

Note: This guide will only help clients who have their domains registered with Truehost. If your domain is registered elsewhere, please contact your registrar for guidance on how to change nameservers as client areas differ depending on registering companies.

 

To log in to your Truehost client area, access our site and click Client Login. A log in form will be presented.

 

 

 

 

Enter your your email and password.

 

 

 

 

 

After successfully logging in, click Domains>>My Domains

 

 

 

 

 

Once you are there, you will see a listing of your domains registered with Truehost. Click on the one you want to change its nameservers. Then click on the Drop Down    menu on the far right side of the row. Click Manage Nameservers.

 

 

 

 

 

You will see the options of Using default nameservers or Using custom nameservers. Select to use custom name servers and change them from there. If you were reverting back to our nameservers, you can select to use default nameservers or type in the name servers when selection is to use custom servers.

 

 

 

 

 

Propagation

Name server changes usually take 24 -48 hours before they are fully effected. This period  is called propagation. During propagation, your site will be unavailable to visitors. Also, your emails will not work. As propagation continues, some visitors will be able to access your site while others will not.

 

How quickly visitors are directed to the new name servers depends on their physical location, internet service provider and some luck; it is not something Truehost has control over. Once propagation is complete, your site will appear on our server and your email will be fully functional.

 

There is no definitive way to tell when propagation is complete. During the first 48 hours, even if you are able to see your site on the new server, your next door neighbor might still be seeing the site on the old server.
