Who Can Register .co.ke Domains

  • Any individual or company in Kenya can register a .co.ke domain name.
  • Foreign entities may also register .co.ke domains if they have a physical presence in Kenya.

Registration Requirements and Restrictions

  • Domain names must be 2 to 63 characters long.
  • The following characters are allowed:
    • Letters (a-z)
    • Numbers (0-9)
    • Hyphen (-)
  • Domain names cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  • Internationalized domain names (IDNs) are supported, allowing registration of domain names in local languages.

Domain Name Features

  • Initial registration period: 1 year
  • Renewal period: 1 year
  • Domains must be renewed before expiration to avoid deletion.
  • Auto-renewal can be enabled to automatically renew domains annually.
  • Domain transfers are supported after 60 days of initial registration.
  • Basic WHOIS privacy can be enabled to hide contact details from public view.

Nameserver Requirements

  • Between 2 and 13 nameservers must be configured.
  • Nameservers must use IPv4 addresses. IPv6 and DNSSEC are not currently supported.

Making Changes to .co.ke Domains

Any changes made to the domain may take up to 48 hours propagate across DNS servers. This includes:

  • Nameserver modifications
  • Contact detail updates
  • Registrant transfers

Suspensions and Restorations

  • Domains without valid nameserver configurations may be suspended 30 days after expiration.
  • Suspended domains can be restored during a 60 day grace period by renewing the domain and fixing configuration issues.
  • After 60 days, suspended domains are released and made available for registration by others.

Cancellation Policy

  • Domain cancellations must be handled through the registrar used to register the domain.
  • Refunds are not provided for cancelled domains. The remainder of the registration period is lost when a domain is cancelled.
