WhatsApp usernames will let customers contact an account without first knowing its phone number. For a business, that username can become as recognizable as its domain name or social handle.
Meta announced username reservations on June 29, 2026. Reservations began rolling out that week. The full contact feature will reach users gradually during 2026.
Do not treat this as one more profile setting. Reserve the business name, register the matching domain and use the same spelling wherever customers find you.

How WhatsApp usernames work
A username gives people another way to contact an account. It does not remove the phone number used to set up that account.

According to Meta’s announcement, people will need the exact username to make first contact. WhatsApp will not offer a public directory or username suggestions.
An optional username key can give an account more control over who may send a message.
When the full feature is active, an account with a username enabled can start a new conversation without showing its phone number to the other person. This can help a business owner avoid publishing a personal number on signs, advertisements and public profiles.
On the latest version of WhatsApp, check Settings > Account > Username. If the option is missing, it may not have reached your account or country yet.
A username will not make your business automatically discoverable. Customers still need to see it on your website, Google Business Profile, social pages, receipts, packaging or advertisements.
Match the username to a domain you control
WhatsApp controls usernames on its platform.
It can change the feature or its rules. The same is true of handles on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn.
A domain is different. You can use it for a website, business email, shop, booking page and other services.
You can also move those services without changing the address customers know.
Asset | Example | Job |
|---|---|---|
Business name | Northstar Coffee | Identifies the company |
WhatsApp username |
| Gives customers a memorable contact name |
Domain |
| Gives the business its own web address |
Business email | Connects email to the same identity | |
Social handle |
| Keeps the public name consistent across platforms |
The names do not have to be identical. They should be close enough that a customer can see they belong to the same business.
Search the matching name through Truehost domain registration as soon as you settle on a username. If the .com is available and fits your market, register the matching .com before printing the username on packaging or advertisements.
Choose a username customers can remember
Start with the name customers already use. Remove legal endings such as LLC when they add length but no recognition.
Keep these rules in mind:
Use the public brand. Willow Street Bakery should try
@willowstreetbakerybefore inventing a different name.Make it easy to spell. Avoid substitutions such as
@w1ll0w_str33t2026.Keep it short.
@brightpathtutorsis easier to share than@brightpathtutorsllccompany.Avoid unnecessary numbers. A year will date the username, and random digits are easy to forget.
Leave room to grow.
@cedarcoaststudiocan support more services than@cedarcoastlogodesignonly.
These examples show the difference. They are naming patterns, not claims that the usernames are available.
Business name | Clearer username | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
Willow Street Bakery |
|
| Substituted letters and a date are easy to mistype |
Harbor Home Repairs |
|
| The abbreviation hides the recognizable name |
BrightPath Tutors LLC |
|
| The legal wording adds unnecessary length |
Cedar & Coast Studio |
|
| The narrow service name limits future growth |
Say the username aloud. Can someone type it correctly after hearing it once?
Then check the same name as a domain and on your main social platforms. Also search for similar businesses and trademarks in the markets where you operate.
If you are still choosing between names, use this domain-name selection guide to compare length, spelling and memorability.
Secure the complete name in four steps
Handle the time-sensitive registrations before redesigning profiles or printing new materials.
1) Reserve the WhatsApp username
Update WhatsApp and open Settings > Account > Username. Enter the preferred name and check the spelling before confirming it.
Meta says small businesses, creators and organizations can claim an existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp. Use that option when it keeps the name customers already recognize.
If the username setting is not available yet, keep your other handles stable and check again as the rollout continues.
2) Register the matching domain
Check the exact .com first for a global business. If you mainly serve one country, also consider its country-code extension.
Domain choice | Often fits | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| International or broadly commercial brands | Check it first when customers may assume the |
Country-code domain such as | A business focused on one country | Use the extension customers in that market recognize, subject to its rules |
Descriptive extension such as | Retail and ecommerce projects | Keep the complete address short and check the matching |
Both | A local brand with wider growth plans | Choose one main website and redirect the other domain to it |
A second domain can protect an important variation or prevent customer confusion. It can also redirect visitors to the primary website. You do not need dozens of extensions. Focus on the names customers are most likely to type and the markets you actually serve.
Register .com for $7.75
Register .shop for $1.10
Register .top for $1.49
Register .us for $4.73
Register .net for $8.53
If the exact domain is unavailable, avoid random digits and long strings of hyphens.
A short location or industry word may work, but check that full name across WhatsApp and your other important platforms before using it.

3) Create business email
Use the domain for addresses such as:
[email protected]for general inquiries;[email protected]for quotes;[email protected]for customer help; and[email protected]for invoices.
A matching email gives customers another way to check a message that claims to come from your company.
You can set up business email with your domain after registration.
4) Publish the official contact details
Add the WhatsApp username, website and email address to the contact page on your website.
Then update the places customers already use:
Instagram and Facebook bios;
email signatures;
receipts, invoices and quotations;
product packaging and menus;
marketplace profiles; and
store signs and advertisements.
Place the username beside the task it supports.
An online shop may show it on product, checkout and order-help pages. A service business may use it on contact, booking and support pages.
On printed materials, place it where a customer is likely to act. Good locations include business cards, receipts, menus, flyers, delivery notes, product packaging and store signs.
A compact email signature can connect the same identity:
Your Brand
Website:yourbrand.com
Email:[email protected]
WhatsApp:@yourbrand
If your WordPress site sends customers into a chat, follow the guide to adding a WhatsApp button to WordPress.
Test the destination after changing the account details.
Help customers spot fake accounts
A clear username can reduce confusion, but someone may still create a similar name. Your website should tell customers which account is official.
Use a short notice such as:
Official contact: Our WhatsApp username is
@yourbrand. Confirm payment instructions and current contact details atyourbrand.com.
Also protect the account itself:
enable WhatsApp two-step verification;
never share registration or device-linking codes;
review linked devices regularly;
keep recovery details in a company-controlled account;
limit administrator access; and
record who may approve account or username changes.
Meta warns that scammers may ask people to share device-linking codes or scan QR codes. Its 2026 anti-scam update explains the suspicious-linking warnings added to WhatsApp.
What to do if the username is taken
Do not rush to add random characters. Try useful variations in this order:
Check whether Meta offers the matching Instagram or Facebook username to your business.
Remove a legal ending such as
LLCorLtd.Add one lasting location or industry word.
Check the adjusted name as a domain and on your main social platforms.
If the account appears to impersonate your brand, save the evidence and use WhatsApp’s reporting process.
For example:
Situation | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
Local service business |
| The location explains the variation |
Retail business |
| The added word matches the customer task |
Property company |
| The industry word clarifies the account |
Product or app |
| The short action word keeps the brand recognizable |
Choose one variation and use it consistently. A clear variation is better than an exact name on one platform and unrelated names everywhere else.
A username or domain does not create trademark rights
Owning @yourbrand or yourbrand.com does not automatically give you the legal right to use that name.
An earlier rights holder may still challenge it.
The US Patent and Trademark Office explains that trademarks, business names and domain names are different. Registering a domain alone does not create trademark rights.

Before investing in a new name:
search for existing trademarks in your category and target countries;
check similar business names and domains;
keep records showing when the business started using the name; and
seek qualified advice when the name is central to a valuable brand.
ICANN’s domain dispute policy covers certain bad-faith registrations. It is still safer to check first and avoid names that trade on another company’s reputation.
Check everything before you announce the name
Complete these steps in one sitting when possible:
Write the exact public spelling of the business name.
Check the preferred WhatsApp username and useful variations.
Search the matching
.comand relevant country-code domain.Check the name on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google.
Search for business-name and trademark conflicts in the markets you serve.
Reserve the username and register the domain under company-controlled accounts.
Create at least one role-based business email address.
Add the username, domain and email address to the website contact page.
Update the profiles, documents, signs and advertisements customers already use.
Record the administrators, recovery details and approval process for future changes.
Ask someone outside the business to compare the username, website and email.
If they cannot quickly tell that all three belong together, fix the naming before spending money on promotion.
WhatsApp usernames give businesses a more private way to start conversations. The matching domain gives that username an independent home on the web.
If your preferred name is available, register the matching domain with Truehost before it appears on your next advertisement, invoice or storefront.
