Vaultwarden is a self-hosted, lightweight server that lets you run your own private password manager, fully compatible with all official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions. It gives you and your team a secure place to store passwords, notes, and other credentials without relying on a third-party cloud service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Setting Up Email (SMTP) and Inviting Users <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vaultwarden needs a working email (SMTP) connection before it can send account invitations, password\u2011reset emails, or two\u2011factor login codes. This guide walks you through logging into the admin area, configuring SMTP, testing it, and inviting your users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ll need the Admin Login Token<\/strong> from your welcome email for this guide. This is different from any individual user’s login password. Keep it private, as it grants full control over the instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you start, have your SMTP provider’s details ready: host, port, username, and password (or app password). If you don’t have an SMTP provider yet, services like SendGrid, Mailjet, or your existing email provider’s SMTP relay all work well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Log in to the admin area<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open your Admin URL<\/strong> this was sent in your welcome email, and looks like https:\/\/your-domain.com\/admin<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Enter the Admin Login Token<\/strong> from the email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Click Log In<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Step 2: Open the SMTP settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1. From the admin dashboard, go to Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Scroll down to the SMTP Email Settings<\/strong> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Step 3: Fill in your SMTP details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Enter the following fields using the details from your email provider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      From Address<\/strong><\/td>The “From” email address users will see, e.g. no-reply@yourdomain.com<\/code><\/td><\/tr>
      From Name<\/strong><\/td>A display name, e.g. your company name<\/td><\/tr>
      Username<\/strong><\/td>Your SMTP account username (often the same as the From Address)<\/td><\/tr>
      Password<\/strong><\/td>Your SMTP account password or app-specific password<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      The other settings can be left unchanged unless acquired from your provider. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Once everything is filled in, click Save<\/strong> at the bottom of the section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The screenshot below shows an example configuration. Always use the credentials provided by your own email\/SMTP provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 4: Test the SMTP connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Before inviting anyone, confirm the settings actually work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Still on the Settings page, find the Test SMTP<\/strong> field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Enter an email address you can check (your own is fine).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Click Test<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        1. Check that inbox (and spam\/junk folder) for the test email.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          If the test fails, double-check the host, port, security mode, username, and password. A wrong port\/security combination is the most common cause of errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          2. Invite your users<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Once the test email arrives successfully, you’re ready to invite people to the vault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. In the admin area, go to Users<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Click Invite User<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Enter the person’s email address and confirm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            The user will receive an email with a link to set up their account. Invitation links are valid for 5 days<\/strong> if someone doesn’t respond in time, simply send a new invite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            What your users do next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Once invited, each user should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. Open the invitation email and click the setup link.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. Create a master password<\/strong> this is unique to Vaultwarden and separate from any password used elsewhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. Log in at the User Side URL<\/strong> (e.g. https:\/\/your-domain.com<\/code>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            4. Optionally install the Bitwarden apps and browser extensions<\/a>. Vaultwarden works with all official Bitwarden clients.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
